University of Hawaii student-athletes can’t make much noise on the fields of play these days, but their work in the classroom continues to be noticed.
It turns out Vulcans alum Vaclav Slezak has a mind to match his game. One of the best tennis players in program history, Slezak was named to the NCAA Division II Co-SIDA All-Academic Team.
Along with holding down the Nos. 1 singles and doubles slots in leading UHH to the NCAA semifinals, Slezak, a native of the Czech Republic, graduated with a 3.35 grade point average and a degree in business marketing.
• Oahu’s Dylan Sugimoto, who helped spearhead UHH to a renaissance season on the baseball field, was named to the Co-SIDA Academic Division II All-District Team, graduating with a 3.65 GPA and a degree in kinesiology. An outfielder, Sugimoto hit .306 with a 419 on-base percentage.
• Former soccer standout Jaimie Salas is UHH’s nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year honors. Salas was a two-year starter after a transferring from Arizona, and she was a second team all-PacWest Conference pick in 2018 as UHH finished second.
Salas graduated with a 3.809 GPA, majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry.
